Charlie Danoff's online portfolio of 🏀 analytics, models, research, scouting and journalism. This includes work from 2007 to present. If you have feedback, suggestions, or a desire to collaborate, please get in touch.
A five-variable OLS model trained on three rookie classes (2023–2025) uses pre-draft weight, hand width, standing vertical, lane agility, and wingspan to project rookie-year Defensive BPM — restricted to rookies who actually saw the floor for at least 100 NBA minutes. Includes a sortable 2026 leaderboard, a live calculator, and the 2023–25 backtest.
Read the modelCharlie Danoff has been publishing patient, rigorous basketball analytics and journalism since 2007 — beginning with a Bleacher Report piece predicting Rajon Rondo would become a successful NBA floor leader, before the Celtics won their 2008 title.
Two conference posters followed: Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics Conference (2019, WNBA All-Defensive teams) and the Rocky Mountain Symposium on Analytics in Sports at the University of Denver (2019, analytics staffing and NBA wins). Basketball analytics coursework grounded the method side.
In 2025 his first peer reviewed journal paper was published about the defensive side next gen stats in the NFL.
As part of Mr. Danoff's Teaching Laboratory, I actively seek partnerships with university faculty in Sport Management, Kinesiology, and Data Science. If you are building the next generation of sports analysts, I want to help bridge the gap between classroom theory and front-office reality.
My GitHub repositories include clean, real-world pipelines (e.g., SportRadar API integration, NBA Draft Combine anthropometrics, and defensive box-score metrics). Faculty are welcome to fork these datasets for capstone projects, econometrics assignments, or student internship baselines.
Available for virtual or in-person guest lectures on defense-side basketball analytics, OLS regression in sports, and the realities of public-data modeling.
Building on my previous conference work (CMSAC '19, RMSAS '19), I am open to co-authoring peer-reviewed papers or presenting jointly at sports analytics symposia. Particularly interested in research surrounding pre-draft forecasting, defensive metrics, and the translation of analytics to coaching staffs.
